What Types of Material Can I Use for an RV Kitchen Backsplash?
There are MANY types and finishes you can use for your kitchen or bathroom backsplash. However, with a RV, camper, or motorhome you have to be aware of the weight of the product because of moving from one site to another.
BUT, if you live in a stationary RV, the sky-is-the-limit!
A variety of materials can be used for kitchen backsplashes, each offering different aesthetics, durability, and maintenance requirements. Here are some popular options:
- Ceramic Tile: Affordable, durable, and available in many styles and colors.
- Porcelain Tile: Similar to ceramic but denser and more water-resistant.
- Glass Tile: Reflective, modern, and easy to clean.
- Stone Tile: Options include marble, granite, slate, and travertine; each providing a natural, elegant look.
- Metal: Stainless steel, copper, and tin are durable and give an industrial or rustic feel.
- Mosaic Tile: Small tiles of glass, ceramic, or stone arranged in intricate patterns.
- Subway Tile: Classic, versatile, and available in various colors and finishes.
- Wood: Adds warmth and texture, but requires proper sealing to protect against moisture.
- Brick: Offers a rustic and textured look; needs sealing for kitchen use.
- Quartz: Durable, non-porous, and can be matched with quartz countertops.
- Concrete: Modern, industrial look; can be custom-made to fit any space.
- Acrylic Panels: Sleek, easy to clean, and available in various colors and finishes.
- Chalkboard Paint: Functional and fun, allows for writing notes and recipes.
- Mirror: Adds depth and light to the kitchen; requires regular cleaning to keep smudge-free.
- Peel-and-Stick Tile: Easy to install and remove, perfect for temporary or budget-friendly solutions. Great lightweight option for RVs, motorhomes, and campers.
Each material has its pros and cons, so the choice will depend on your kitchen’s style, where you are using it, your budget, and how much maintenance you’re willing to perform.
Why Should I Use Self Adhesive Tile in My Kitchen?
There are several reason to use peel-and-stick tile as a backsplash in your kitchen or bathroom:
- Affordable and economical: In comparison to genuine stone or tile, peel-and-stick tile offers many of the same “looks” at a fraction of the cost. Plus, you can purchase lower quantities that make peel and stick tiles an economical option.
- Ease of Installation: No need for a tile cutter OR grout when you are using self adhesive tile products. All you really need is a measuring tape, scissors or utility knife, and a level. Oh, and, of course, peel-and-stick tile! 😉
- Variety of Styles and Designs: There are SO many styles of peel and stick tile for a backsplash! Anywhere from a subway tile look to a cement look, and everything in between. You can pretty much find a peel and stick product to match any ‘real’ material!
- Lightweight Material: When you are using an RV, motorhome, or camper for traveling purposes (like most do), using lightweight materials/products/furniture is key. You don’t want to bog down your vehicle, causing mechanical issues, tire-wear, or even gas inefficiency. With peel-and-stick tiles, you can get the same look as the heavier materials for your kitchen backsplash, but travel light!
How to Choose the Right Peel and Stick Tiles for Your Kitchen Backsplash
Though there are SO many options to choose from for peel-and-stick tile, you may want to consider these tips while shopping:
- Material Options: There are many material types to consider when perusing the web or store for your peel-and-stick tile. There is the more common Polyurethane (PU), Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA), peel and stick glass tile, aluminum, real wood, stone, pebbles, and even mother of pearl, to name a few.
- Color and Design Considerations: Be sure to consider the aesthetic you desire in your home, RV, or camper. Is the style you are contemplating going to appear dated after several years? Does the color work with the rest of the kitchen or bathroom? Will you easily tire of the color after 3-5 years?
- Durability and Maintenance: You will also want to check reviews and posts about the peel-and-stick tile that interests you. Are there any issues with the adhesive failing or the finish wearing off/peeling? Depending on the finish, what type of cleaning will you need to do (i.e., a quick swipe with a damp cloth, or scrubbing textures that might have an attraction to grease and food splashes)?
