NEUTRAL RUGS IDEAS for SMALL SPACES

It’s no secret that I LOVE the color aqua.  Actually, “give me all the greens” has been one of my mantras for a while now.

It’s also no secret that I have a large aqua area rug in the small living room at My Wee Abode.  The rug was a gift from my sister, DeeDee, and there have been many compliments on the rug. 😉  It’s been lovely in this room!

Pretty, right?

But lately… it just feels like it’s too much aqua.

Don’t get me wrong! I still love aqua, but the rug has limited me as to what colors can be used in MWA. Ya know what I mean?

My Wee Abode needs a little ‘refresh’ and a tighter color palette… more neutral, I’m thinkin’.

So, let’s look at some neutral rug ideas for small spaces that are great options in an apartment, dorm room, small home, or any size space for that matter!

(Side note: How to choose an area rug and what the different options entail is coming soon in another post.  Today, we’re just going to shop!  AND, you’ll be seeing all the choices in the same photo above! More on how that is done in the coming post, too!)

Synthetic (Indoor/Outdoor) Rugs

These rugs can often be used indoor or outdoor and are many times made from Polypropylene.

Wool Rugs

Wool rugs tend to be the most pricey, but are the most long-lasting.

Oh, if I had the money for this… Love it!

  1. Julie, I like the faded one…I believe it is Nightscape Withering Medallion Fringe! They are all good choices and I still like the rug your sis gave you but I understand the limitations. Did you use a special program to show all the rugs….I am almost positive you did not actually place each rug under your furniture. It makes me tired just thinking about that chore. LOL Have a great week end my friend.

    1. I agree… all of them are great (except maybe the yellowish ones). And I still love the aqua rug, too. I’ll be sharing how I was able to see all the rugs in my room in my follow-up post! 😉 Hehe!

  2. Definitely the swirls is my favorite, my second favorite is the stripe at the end of the line. Your room is tiny and cute, but I think, like you, making it all neutral is the way to go. Another suggestion, and this is just my opinion, is that your window, which is a huge part of your room, needs some softening – even just a pair of neutral colored sheers stacked on a rod on either side would cozy up the room a great deal – and with the new swirl rug, would look amazing.

    1. The swirls one seems to be a fave! 😉 Thanks for the suggestions, Pat. Always enjoy hearing thoughts from the MWA fam. I definitely have plans for the windows in MWA (I have another huge window in my bedroom), however, it’s going to be a project (have I piqued your interest? LOL!) So, I need to find the time and just a wee bit of money. Hugs!

  3. Wow, those are all fabulous. I am with most everyone and my favorite is the Venice Vine Swirls. I do like the Tuscan Wool Shag also. I am going to say that you went with – The Fawna Handwoven Chaste! It’s just a guess, but it looks incredible! Love the way you showed all those! Thank you for sharing!

  4. The Swirls rug is beautiful and really gives the room some personality. Some of the others are really pretty, but don’t do a lot for your room.

    1. Yes, it is pretty! As for the others, it depends on the plans you have the room! (wink, wink) Thanks for dropping in, Glenda… and commenting. Always fun to hear from you. Hugs!

  5. I love the faded ‘Nightscape’ rug!! It needs to be in my living room!! The price is great too! I am not sure which rug yiu will pick but I think it might habe gray in it!

    1. Trying to get healthy (still) to get my reveal up! Ugh! The Nightscape one is lovely… and Rugsusa.com has some great prices! 😉

  6. Yes, I love the swirly one, too! It’s such a smart idea to see the rugs in your space, and I highly recommend the indoor/outdoor rugs for indoors. Of course, I have no other option with my little ones. 🙂

  7. Julie, my fav is the Medallion fringe night shade it’s beautiful with an old world charm, but the swirls with it’s upbeat charm has tons of personality and seems like a better fit with your decor. Plus the swirls will go with many different patterns and colors.
Let us know soon what you pick!

    Love,
    Rachelle

    1. So many to choose from, right Rachelle? I think the swirl one is lovely, but it does limit me as to some thoughts I have for MWA’s future… like if I want to layer rugs there, or if I want to add a DIY storage ottoman with a print… you know, stuff like that. 😉 Also, the top of my media console already has swirls. Adding a swirled rug may make me and guests a little dizzy! LOL!

  8. Oh I really liked so many of these rugs. Venice Vine and the Bosphorus Floral Symphony were my favorites. I’m curious to see what you picked and how you were about to view them all in the same pic.

    1. Thanks, Patti… I’m hoping to have the reveal up this week. 🙂 All the rugs are lovely… so hard to choose!
