Use a “Light” Hand for Early Fall Decor

When adding decor to your late summer home in preparation for the autumn season, use an ‘edited’ hand.

You know… don’t go all out with pumpkins, acorns, or large pinecones. Save that for when we are in full-swing cozy weather (or not!).

Is this as hard for you as it is for me?

Try this tip… Remove all the decor from your room (except for permanent decor on the walls). Then slowly add items to your space, and then…

Take one or two tchatchkes from the space.

This should help give you a minimal look that is perfect for the early fall season.

Sparingly Use Faux Fall Florals

Usually, faux florals show-up in full-force at My Wee Abode. However, this late in the summer, you may want to use ‘fauxs’ just a bit less than how you might want to use them in September.

For the first time, I didn’t use florals on the wreath above my media center. It’s taking a bit to get used to, but I think it’s nice to have something more minimal this early in the season.

What do you think?

Some orange ‘berries’ in my mini black lanterns add a pop of autumnal color, as well.

Also, I added some faux fall stems to the large amber demijohn on my window bench.

Because this area is so hard to photograph, I started with some warm-colored eucalyptus stems… but for a more neutral fall look, the white pampas/plume reed stems worked better.

Which do you like better?

Add Textiles for a Pop of Color

Textiles will not only add a pop of color, but they add texture, as well.

This lovely blue light-weight throw was a gift from a dear blogging friend that visited this past spring. Adding this muted blue color works very well with the amber bottles and neutral tones being used throughout the living area.

The blue and gray striped pillow with the neutral button pillow continues the blue color throughout the living room.

It’s Time to Add Some Candles!

Are you as excited as I am to start using candles again?

Here in So Cal, using candles during the summer is a little counter-intuitive. You just don’t want to add any more heat to a room, no matter how small the flame! 🙂

So, I’m excited to use this lovely Bridgewater Candle in the Sweet Grace fragrance, the signature scent in my little loft.

You can place a large white pillar candle in a pretty bowl as a candle holder, too. This little bowl is actually a measuring cup from the Hearth and Hand line (no longer available).

Use Natural Elements for Texture

As you can see above, adding some touches of nature can add an unexpected surprise that can pack a nice little ‘punch’.

Adding some mini pinecones throughout the room says, “fall is coming”, without saying “fall is here”.

This is the first year I’ve used amber bottles, and I’m loving them! Do you use amber bottles in your decor for fall?

You can also use some neutral and/or warm colored stones in a wooden bowl as natural fall decor. Polish your own stones you’ve found in the park or beach with an affordable rock tumbler.

Easy Fall Decor Ideas for Late Summer

My final tip for your early fall decor? Decorate your home the way YOU love! Remember, you are creating a lovely dwelling for you and your family to enjoy!

But, you just might want to try something new, like I did this year!

  1. Julie, so many great ideas. I’m obsessed with that amber demijohn. I’m always on the lookout for one while thrifting. It’s great to know that I could buy it through your link if I continue to come up empty-handed. Both florals look great but I might prefer the warm eucalyptus. That’s just me wanting color.

    1. Yes… I think I may bring the eucalyptus back next month, when it gets cooler here in So Cal. And the demijohn was a find at Hobby Lobby… in their regular glass aisle. I waited for the sale and got it for $10! Woot!

  2. I absolutely love your “fall is coming” style, Julie! It’s perfect for this time of year when you want fall décor but it’s just too dang hot to really get into it!
To answer your question, while I love eucalyptus, I prefer the pampas grass but I bet you knew I would say that!
I have a couple new amber pieces too. I haven’t used amber glass before but couldn’t resist this season!

    1. Yes, I figured you would say the pampas grass! I wish I could get it to photograph well, but it’s just in a lousy spot. But, it does look great with all the other decor surrounding the window! 😉 Amber bottles for the win this season! Woot!

  3. Julie, I love the minimalist look of the basket instead of a wreath above your media center. It’s a nice change and has a great fall vibe. I’ve been embracing color lately, so I prefer the eucalyptus to the pampas grass. I love the look of amber glass, too, especially in fall decor. You’ve created a perfect transition of MWA from summer to early fall decor! It was fun to join you on the home tour, my friend 🙂 Pinned!

    1. Yes, I was delighted to see that we would be ‘hopping’ together, Rebecca! Thanks for the kind words… Even though it sounds weird, I’m enjoying ‘slapping’ my hands when I go to add more! 😉 (told you it sounded weird!)

  4. Oh I’m really loving the blue throw on your wood bench. It is so pretty and the colors work so well together. I’m also loving all your transitional fall decor ideas especially since I’m not quite ready to dive into full pumpkin mode yet. Lovely post sweet friend! Pinning!

    1. Thank you, Michelle! I love the throw, as well. It was actually a gift from Yvonne when she was visiting in the spring. She gave one to me and one to her daughter. Jacquie used it as a tablecloth one evening. It was inspiring!

  5. I love all of your pretty fall florals and natural touches, Julie. A great way to start to introduce fall decor into your home!

    1. Thanks, Jen! It was fun to have things a little more simple for this time of year. Kinda just makes sense for me!

  6. I prefer the little bit of color from the eucalyptus in the amber glass and it looks good with the candle and blue textile. I am thinking of using my dried from last years hydrangeas. I have a gold vase as no amber here but may invest in some if I see one I really like. Thanks for sharing, I really hadn’t given much thought to fall yet as am busy in the garden.

    1. Thanks for the vote for the eucalyptus, Fernie… I may put it back as fall draws closer and My Wee Abode gets a bit cooler! Hugs and hearts, friend!

  7. Great job Julie. Everything looks lovely and I adore those amber jars! I think having a “light” hand with late summer is key as well but my hands seem to feel like Shrek’s. I remember one year I walked into the house and it looked like Hobby Lobby threw up everywhere. It was early September! That was the last time for that. Then a couple of years I started blogging. Back to vomiting. :0

  8. Oh, Julie, I just love your cutie patootie place! It looks so welcoming all decked out with just the right amount of fall decor ideas! Someday I dream of coming to enjoy it in person!😉

    1. Someday, I dream of you coming! We would have such a blast, and stay up through the night laughing our selves silly!

    1. Right? I’m excited to add the pumpkins and acorns in a month or so. Although… we HAVE had some very nice temps here this past week! And last night I slept with a blanket and long PJs! Woot!

  9. These are some amazing tips! I love the idea of introducing the season without going all in. Plus it gives another chance to decorate – which is always fun! You share such great ideas, Julie. Always love seeing your posts!

    xoxo,
    Jen

    1. Thanks, Jen… always love your blog, too! It will be fun to add some pumpkins and acorns later in the season!

    1. Thanks, Angie… I have always wanted to use amber bottles for fall, and this year I was able to make it happen! 😉

  10. All of your ideas for early Fall are just the right touch. The amber demijohn and the tiny pinecones a fun touch of Fall and that it’s coming before we know it. Thanks for all your tips and tricks for a beautiful Fall space.

  11. I love your style and especially the amber demijohn with the colorful eucalyptus leaves! I think that window is calling out for a window seat though, and the bench would be pretty in front of your sofa, just my 2 cents:).

  12. I’m loving your light touch fall decor, my friend! I am really feeling the pampas grass this season, but I also like the other faux stems. I can’t decide between the two! The minimalist touch over your TV looks so tasteful, too. Love the blue and amber tones as well. (I picked up some amber glass last year, so I’ll be finding a home for that as well.) Pinning!

    1. Thanks, Crissy! I actually have one more amber bottle… I think it will make an appearance in the kitchen! 😉

  13. Julie, I always love visiting your home. Your early fall decor is perfect…simple and tasteful. The amber glass is gorgeous. Both ideas you shared are beautiful, but I think I prefer the eucalyptus as I am looking forward to a little seasonal color. Thank you for sharing such great tips for easing into fall! xo

  14. I love the beautiful and simple touches! It’s easy to get carried away but looking to nature is a good reminder that things gradually change.

  15. You come up with some great tips Julie! I love a slow intro into a new season, and you have done it so well. I like the second option for the amber-colored demijohn glass jar. The colors are perfect! Pinning!

  16. Hello! Thank you for this inspiring article. I definitely love it! I especially love that you used what you already had but made it look fresh and new. This looks awesome. Would love to see how your garden is doing. I’m totally obsessed with how you created the different areas and what it looks like now. You really inspire me, and I want to decorate all my house, thanks to you. God bless your sweet family.

  17. Looks wonderful Julie! I agree that slowly layering in Fall is the way to go. Love all the neutrals you used with the blues. I have been slowly doing a little decorating every week. It is a nice approach instead putting it out all at once. Plus it is 90 this week, gross! Well, anyways thank you for sharing on Home Imagined.
