Easy Patriotic Decor for a Summer Vignette
After you’ve been around the MWA blog for awhile, there’s one thing that is pretty clear…
I really don’t like decorating for the 4th of July. I share the story of ‘why’ on this post.
However, when you become a blogger that often features decor from your home, you soon discover that the patriotic holidays are kind of a ‘must’. And a 4th of July DIY here and there are often included.
So, when I found out that this month’s challenge was to create anything with flags, I thought, “I can do THAT! Easy-peasy!”
Easy Inspiration Photo
And when I saw that our inspiration photo was from the Liz Marie Blog, and was super simple patriotic decor, I KNEW I could do something quick and easy! (The best type of decor, right?)
Woven vases and vintage flags. What could be easier for patriotic vignettes?
How Do You Add Red White and Blue to a Summer Vignette?
You may have noticed my summer tray vignette on my coffee table from this summer’s home tour…
The coastal style of this vignette is so light, airy, and refreshing!
NOW to add the RWB colors. Perfectly patriotic (yet still understated… just the way I like it)!
Here is a quick diagram of what I changed and/or added:
- Of course, you need to add your own DIY mini flags. The colors are understated and I love the ‘special’ fabric with the tassels on the RWB one!
- Look closely, and you can see that I switched out my white cupcake-turned-candle holder for a red one. It’s the little things! (Check your local Hobby Lobby for these cute little pedestals.)
- If you have some blue grapevine filler balls around, add these to your vignette. Don’t have any blue? Spray paint some blue or red!
- And finally, a couple months ago I found this cute little RWB beach house in the dollar space at Target. I may need to do a DIY on these! 😉
And that’s it! I told you it was easy… I wouldn’t lie to YOU!
Creative Red White Blue Decor
You can add anything that you find around the house that reminds you of the holiday… or even just use anything red, white OR blue!
- Stars… whether they are red, white, or blue… they will look great in a patriotic vignette.
- Hearts… even RWB hearts work for the 4th of July decor!
- Beads… string some red/white/blue beads on a piece of jute and lay them on a tray! Super cute!
- Anything with a ‘nautical’ vibe… lighthouse, sailboat, lifesaver, ship’s wheel, anchor, etc.
- Red/white/blue printables are free, and lovely! 😉
Adding Red White and Blue to a Summer Vignette
Whether your want to add patriotic colors to your existing decor, or you want to create a special patriotic vignette from the bottom-up, it really is easy and affordable if you think outside the box.
And here are some closeups of my summery vignette with red-white-and-blue…
This sandpiper figurine is a fave of mine… it shows up every summer.
And these mini flags are SUPER easy to make, plus you can customize them!
This candle is wrapped in white cotton twine and then dry-brushed with blue paint. Add a mini sand dollar, pop it on a red cupcake stand and voila! Coastal/patriotic decor!
For someone that has an ‘aversion’ to patriotic decor, I’m actually loving this pretty little vignette!
Will you be adding some patriotic decor to your home for the 4th of July celebration? Be sure to tell me in the comments if you do! And share them on my Facebook page, too!
Now, be sure to hop on over to French Ethereal. Barbara is sharing her patriotic decor that you can do in less than 5 minutes!

Such a cute vignette Julie. I love the beachy take on the challenge. Have a Yankee Doodle dandy of a day!
Thanks, Laura… again, we BOTH are using our DIY flags! 😉
Hi Julie, Looks great! Love the beach vibes! xo laura
Thanks, Laura! Glad your post finally was fixed!
I love your subtle, beachy patriotic decor. So pretty without being “too” red, white, and blue.
Thanks, Niky… def the look I’m going for! My daughter just approved having me bring it to her BBQ on Tuesday. It will be fun as a centerpiece!
Julie, Your flags are so pretty. It’s amazing how big an impact can be made with small changes. So fun. Happy Summer.
Thanks, Renae… Yep, just a few touches of RWB, and it makes an impact! 😉
Really cute, Julie! I love the little sandpiper and just the small changes to make your theme change to Coastal Americana. Very pretty!!! No, I don’t normally go for RWB but this year I am more into it. 🙂 I’ll have to go reread why you have an aversion to RWB. I know my MIL and SIL decorated their last home with Mickey Mouse and red, white, black and yellow in one bathroom. I hated it… Worst possible combination of colors for me! But they liked it, which is all that matters!! 😉 *** Glad Gramma is going for just blues and whites in most of her home, with red and Hawaiian only in her bedroom. <3
Enjoy your soft RWB decor and those little cloth flags are adorable!!!!
Happy 4th hugs,
Barb 🙂
Thanks, Barbara… Coastal Americana… I LOVE it! 😉 Yeah… hmmm… Mickey Mouse? My sister LOVES the Hawaiian theme. 😉
I love your vignette! You have a good eye. God bless
Thanks, Josee! Always appreciate your visits! Hope you have a wonderful holiday!
I love your DIY flags, Julie. Everything looks ready for the 4th!
Thanks, Kim! Yeah… maybe I’ll take it to my daughter’s on the 4th for a centerpiece! 😉
Such a cutie little vignette, Julie!! That sandpiper is so stinking adorable!
I love the nod to the holiday without being so bright and ‘loud’. Thanks so much for sharing at Home Imagined this week! Pinned!!
Thanks, Rachel! I actually like this patriotic decor more than any other I have done. 😉
An aversion to patriotic decor?! Are you communist?! LOL. I get though. I’m not a big fan of red at all but there’s something about the red, white and blue together that makes me smile – real big. I’m glad our Texas flag has the same colors. I don’t know what I’d do if it were like green and yellow or orange and brown (not that any are, IDK). Anyway, love your vignette and the easy switcharoo. Seems like just the right amount of festiveness. Glad you got to join in this month. pinned
Thanks, Cindy. You always make me laugh! Yeah… not sure if we had a mix of other colors if I would be happier! LOL!
Your coastal red, white and blue works form me Julie! I don’t decorate with much red at all, only flags and I love your DIY flags! Your tray would look cute anywhere even as a centerpiece. Love it!!
LOL! We actually used it as the centerpiece at Nika’s on the 4th. It was so fun, but NO ONE said anything about it! LOL!
The fabric flags are so cute and love that sandpiper. All displayed on the woven tray; perfect summer look!
Thank you so much, Lora! Appreciate you dropping in, too!
Julie, you managed to create a light and airy coastal patriotic vibe with those sweet flags! What a darling vignette! Enjoy the 4th!
Thanks, Cindy! We enjoyed the vignette at my daughter’s home for the 4th, too!
What a darling vignette Julie. Love your little flags and that adorable lifeguard station. So creative. Have a wonderful 4th of July.
Thanks so much, Wendy. I’m excited to use the others next year!
What a fun and creative vignette. You switched things out so you have a totally different theme and that is perfect. Love your little house and those flags are so perfect.
Thanks, Marty. It was a fun vignette that I took to my daughter’s and used as the centerpiece on the 4th! 😉
Julie, your vignette is spot on. Love those flags – again. Your bird is whimsical and fun. But that little house is so precious. What a great find. Have a Happy 4th.
Yeah… I love that little house, too! Thanks, Carol!
Love this patriotic coastal vignette! The flags are so cute! I’ve missed seeing your posts on Crafty Creators, so I had to come visit you. Hope to see you there. Have a blessed 4th of July weekend!
Thanks, Niki. Sometimes I struggle to hit all the parties. And now my VA is on a break, so we’ll see what happens!
